Angel In The Water

Stormy sky painting of clouds gathering over ocean waves

Angel In The Water

by Brett Lohn

Measuring 26 x 48 inches, this oil painting was produced as a pair, alongside Mediterranean Symphony. It took nine months to create and is composed looking out across the French Riviera, from the Base Nature at Fréjus, on the Côte D’Azur.

With this painting I wanted to recreate the beauty of the Côte D’Azur but without the blue sky and hot sun that we would normally associate with that part of the world.

Shafts of light pierce through the heavy storm clouds moving over the Mediterranean coastline, as we stand before the choppy tide. The distant sky is as dark as night, punctuated only by glimpses of the almost forgotten sun.

This painting explores the idea that perhaps not every day will be bright. However, there is beauty to be found even in times of upheaval, if we do not allow ourselves to become preoccupied with the storm clouds on the horizon.

Even when the sky is dark, the sea remains beautiful.

An angel has been painted swimming in the stormy tide, as a reminder that there are times when a friendly face, or a smile, can bring comfort even in an uncertain environment. If we knew that there was an angel waiting for us in the water, we would lose our fear of the gathering storm.

Take comfort from those that are around you today.

Tomorrow’s worries rarely live up to their billing.

A brief time-lapse film has been lovingly produced, charting the creation of this painting from start to finish. I would encourage you to take the time to watch it, if you can.

'Angel In The Water' is available to buy as a limited edition print.
