by Brett Lohn
Measuring 18 x 12 inches and painted in oil on canvas, ‘Stradivarius At Ascot’ portrays one of the most popular racehorses of his generation, exhibiting the turn of foot that made him so successful.
Painted with Frankie Dettori on board, in the unmistakable colours of Bjorn Nielsen, we see the chestnut champion stayer racing, fully extended, against the backdrop of Ascot Racecourse. Brett has captured every muscle and contour of Stradivarius’ body, to portray a staggering feeling of movement from this powerful and unique horse.
As with all of Brett’s equestrian work, as much attention has been paid to the background of the painting as it has to the horse himself. Only a camera blurs the background of an action picture. Brett feels strongly that a painting should not fall into this trap.
The result is a living, breathing painting that conveys the sheer excellence of this superstar stayer, as if the viewer were actually present at the races.
Stradivarius is a handsome stallion who has attained a rare level of success in the most distinguished company. In this oil painting, Brett captures the horse’s unmistakable charisma, whilst portraying his class beating power and obvious enjoyment of racing at the highest level.
Brett has produced a fascinating time-lapse film that shows the painting's creation from start to finish. It makes thoroughly entertaining viewing.
