by Brett Lohn
This striking equestrian portrait is of the 1991 Derby winner, Generous. Brett met Generous at stud in Newmarket several years after he had retired from racing. The idea of the painting was to capture the horse at stud but with the backdrop of his glory days. Although his physical shape is very different to when he was an all conquering three year old racehorse, he is still the unmistakeable, huge hearted champion that was loved by so many.
Brett has painted Generous with the world famous Derby finish line positioned behind him, hinting at the victory in his past. There are no crowds at Epsom in this portrait, to emphasise that this equestrian painting is of a horse who has now retired.
This oil painting is a great example of Brett’s skill in painting not just a horse portrait but also a beautiful landscape, adding real depth to the painting.
