Auguste Rodin won the 2023 Derby at Epsom Downs by half a length, under the expert guidance of Ryan Moore.
Measuring 3 x 2ft (75 x 60cm), this pencil drawing depicts the bay colt at full stretch, as he approaches the winning line at Epsom Downs. The original drawing was produced in association with the Jockey Club for the 2024 Derby Festival, where it was displayed at Epsom Downs Racecourse, alongside the Derby trophy.
Brett has sought to capture every muscle and contour of Auguste Rodin’s powerful physique, to portray a staggering feeling of movement from this intriguing, world class horse.
The original drawing took Brett 3 months to produce, working from sketches produced as artist in residence at Epsom Downs Racecourse, during the 2023 Derby Festival.
The result is a living, breathing pencil drawing, that emphasises the grace and beauty of this most athletic and stunning of racehorses.
Auguste Rodin is a world beating racehorse who has attained a rare level of success in the most distinguished company. In this drawing, Brett captures arguably the horse’s finest hour, whilst portraying his class beating power and obvious enjoyment of racing at the highest level.
Brett has produced a brief video detailing the production of this beautiful piece of racehorse art. This can be viewed exclusively on his Instagram account.
